Next generation leaders

- a course in personal development for teenagers

Imagine a 17-year old who…

  • has great self-esteem
  • understands his/her own behavior
  • understands which study techniques suit him/her best
  • is a secure and confident public speaker
  • works efficiently and takes responsibility in a group
  • knows how to receive and give feedback in a constructive manner
  • knows how to solve problems independently
  • knows how to control his/her own stress and attitude
  • understands what happens in a stressful situation and finds ways to control it
  • knows how to take care of his/her body and health

Goal

There is a lot of emphasis today on changing one’s image and one’s ways. Perhaps this is based on the idea that we are not good enough as we are. We end up focusing our energy on changing ourselves, instead of identifying and taking advantage of our existing assets and making them flourish.

Ståhl+Partners works with leadership development, communication training, and coaching, in Sweden as well as internationally. We do not change people. Instead, our goal is to enhance existing talents and bring out the best in each individual. When we are at our best, we overcome our weaknesses, mobilize our strengths, feel great about ourselves, and reach our peak performance. This contributes to a positive influence on others around us.

One of Ståhl+Partners’ goals is to be able to contribute to a “better society”. We believe that one of the best ways of doing this is to focus on young people – the next generation of leaders – and contribute our talents and expertise in a non-profit training context.

Background

There are numerous courses out there for teenagers, such as sports camps, language courses, art classes, etc. Strangely enough, though, there are few courses that focus on motivation, self-esteem, confidence, attitude control, personal growth, and presentation skills for this particular group.

Four years ago, one of our satisfied clients said that she would happily pay for a course in self-confidence and personal growth for her two teenage daughters. “Why wait 40 years to learn all this I have learned from you, Helena? And imagine how much better the next generation of leaders would be!”

With this idea in mind, Ståhl+Partners asked teenagers in secondary school in the city of Helsingborg if they would be interested in these types of courses. We also made a need analysis to find out what the teenagers wanted to learn and improve. Overall, the teenagers’ wishes and needs were more or less the same as Swedish business leaders’, except for that the teenagers wished to learn more about study skills. The results lead us to develop a course concept and to approach Kungstensgymnasiet, a secondary school in Stockholm.

Concept

We have developed a training concept geared towards teenagers using our most successful modules and tools. The course consists of six days, with fours days of training and two days of follow-up three months later, which makes the total training cycle about three months long. During the first consecutive four days each participant meets with a personal coach, who also follows up with the participant three months later.

Contents

Step 1 ”Get to know yourself”

Exercises to get to know yourself and others better. Understand why you behave the way you do. Identify what motivates you, your basic needs, your attitudes and your values. Each participant will complete a behavioral test called IDI - Interpersonal Dynamics Inventory – that shows their behavioral pattern and their ability to interpret different situations and individuals correctly.

Step 2 “Enhancing my personal image”

This is training in what is sometimes referred to as the “personal brand”. What about yourself do you want to communicate? Body language, dress style, character, image, reliability, etc. The importance of giving a first impression and giving the impression of the person you want to be. Whether we intend it or not, our clothes make an impact and give others a first impression of us. Still, few of us may pay enough attention to our clothes when we want to give an impression of ourselves.

Step 3 “Nutrition/sleep/fitness, and learning styles and study skills”

In this step we focus on exercise, well-being and study techniques. The importance of nutrition, exercise, sleep and rest for better performance, learning and well-being. How do you learn in the most efficient and effective way? Each participant will make a learning style analysis and learn about useful techniques for optimizing his/her learning.

Step 4 “Presenting in front of a group”

Practical exercises in public speaking, impromptu presentations, reporting as a team, managing your stress and anxiety about public speaking. We end the day with each participant defining his/her personal goal with the training process, how to prepare and work with a project, and how to generate action. The participants also have to make an appointment for an individual meeting with their personal coach.

Approximately 8 weeks later:

Step 5: Follow-up, and “Working in teams and with projects”

Follow-up of the participants’ process and goals. Team building exercises in problem solving as an individual and as a team. How to solve tasks in a creative way, how to show appreciation and give constructive criticism, and how to dare say YES or NO.

Step 6: Next step in my personal development

Were do we stand? In order to plan for the future, you need to have a good understanding of the current situation. We complete an individual situation analysis and look forward. What does the future have in store? What is a vision, and how do you develop your own vision? We work with a tool called ”The personal compass”. The day ends with all participants presenting what they have learned and accomplished, and what they have found makes each of them unique. Each participant makes an appointment for an individual meeting with his/her personal coach in order to be able to maintain his/her new knowledge throughout the school year.

Future Scenario

The following year, right before a new group starts training, earlier participants have an opportunity to learn how to become supervisors and help out with the new group. The supervisor training lasts one day – step 7.

Step 7: ”The personal leadership”

The art of personal leadership is to continuously work on improving and developing oneself in order to be able to lead and develop others. That, in turn, requires self-discipline, focus, courage and self-awareness. In this step you will learn the basics of coaching, so you can coach other participants and see their full potential.
